Hello Potters

Well, how did you go at Einbunpin? I hope you had pieces for sale and that they sold. It was a beautiful Brisbane winter day, and the crowds were out in earnest. Thanks go to the wonderful volunteers who set up and manned the stall and to the demonstration wheel throwers. We will probably get quite a few more members from the interest it generated. Pottery is definitely becoming the flavour of the month, if not the year.

The Ekka is on in a couple of weeks, so if you are taking the kids to the wood chopping don’t forget to go see the pottery and sculpture sections. Also there’s still time to enter the Crackpot Challenge but don’t dawdle as entries are closing fast, see below for details. And don’t forget the Moreton Bay Art Prize is on until 19 August, if you are looking for an exhibition to view.

There is a lot happening in the world of ceramics nowadays, so if you see an exhibition or something that might be useful to other potters write it down and send it in to us for inclusion in the newsletter.

Please note that the weekday sessions are now
10am to 2pm.

There are also some more useful pottery tips from the ‘Collected Wisdom’ newsletters further down that may make your pottery life much easier. Plus we have popped all the tips, hacks and techniques onto a ‘Tips’ page on our club website so that you can refer to them easily.

We really want to see our talented members’ work, so upload your pics to our instagram or facebook page, or email them for inclusion on social media.

From the Kiln Room

The good news is that both of the kilns are now firing correctly. The small kiln was repaired by the electrician and now functions properly. Don’t forget to put your mark on your ceramic piece as otherwise it won’t be fired. If you forget to do it and your piece is dry, there is some underglaze in the kiln room so that you can put your mark on it using that. It is underglaze so it won’t run or stick to the firing shelves.

Safety Issue

It is critical that the studio is kept dust free and ventilated, and that masks are worn when sanding pottery, mixing glazes and loading kilns, as the risk of silicosis is a real danger for potters. So grab a mop whenever you have a spare 10 minutes and give the floors a once over. No sweeping – just mopping. And don’t forget those masks!

Gambling Fund Grants Update

Members should note that "Gambling Community Benefit Fund" (GCBF) grants are a really great way of fundraising for clubs like ours... perhaps the best way!  A new round of gambling fund grants closes at the end of this month but we're unable to enter (for the moment at least) because a previous application hasn't been resolved.  That's one of the criteria - you can't seek a grant while a previous one's unresolved - and the club put in for a grant in February. There are 4 rounds a year - three are a maximum of $35,000 and one each year is a max $100,000.  This year's February one was the biggie... and we put in for a state-of-the-art kiln (energy efficient and monitorable by a phone app!) and some new pottery wheels.  While we can't get optimistic - as these grants are hotly contested - let's keep our fingers crossed, and we'll keep applying if we're unsuccessful on this occasion! 😉👍

Do you know anyone that shows an interest in your pottery?

If you do, why not invite them to come and try pottery for themselves. The first session is free and you know that once you have made something with clay… you’re hooked!

50 Years of Handy Hints

We are fortunate to have received a very useful book titled “Collected Wisdom – 50 years of handy hints” from the Ceramic Study Group, Australia supplied to us by Clare H. from her trip to Gulgong. It is a collection of tips and techniques gathered and published in their newsletters since the 1960’s. Each month we will delve into this vast archive of information regarding all things ceramics and bring to you snippets of their collected wisdom.

Plus we have popped all the tips, hacks and techniques onto a ‘Tips’ page on our club website so that you can refer to them easily.

Having trouble centering your clay on the wheel?

Take a small spirit level that fits within the splash tray of your wheel. Lay it across the wheelhead in various directions and make sure it is level at all times. If not, adjust the legs of wheel (if adjustable type), or pack underneath the feet to correct level.

Still having trouble centering?

Take a piece of board, say, 30cm x 12cm × 1-2cms, and holding firmly at both ends and arms braced on your knees, slowly and evenly push board toward centre of wheel, keeping the lower edge on wheelhead. Try it - it makes a huge difference.

14 Ways To Stop Clay Warping

Tip 1: Flipping Your Slab - try not to bend your slab when flipping

Tip 2: Minimize Handling - It’s generally best to move your clay slabs as little as possible

Tip 3: Use a Bat When Throwing On The Wheel

Tip 4: Roll Slabs in Different Directions

Tip 5: Compress Your Clay - Run a rib over the clay in the same direction to align the particles

Tip 6: Wedge Your Clay

Tip 7: Work with Slightly Thicker Slabs

Tip 8: Use an Absorbent Board

Tip 9: Use Rice Bags or Sand Bags - Place the bag on the middle of the plate as it dries

Tip 10: Use a Metal Drying Rack

Tip 11: Use Clay with a Lower Shrinkage Rate - It’s best to choose a clay body with a shrinkage rate that is lower than 12%

Tip 12:  Load Your Bisque Kiln Carefully - ideally bisque fire slabs, plates, and platters lying flat

Tip 13: Add a Foot Ring

Tip 14: Keep Your Slabs and Plates Level in the Glaze Fire as well
