Shorncliffe Pottery Club Members Chat

Shorncliffe Pottery Club Members Chat | Facebook

This is a new Facebook group for members to share information, ask questions, etc.  This is a member's only group, with questions to answer before you will be admitted.

Membership books are currently closed until January 2024.

Current Membership Site Invitation

If you are a current member you should have received an email from the club inviting you to the members online site. If you didn’t receive an email please contact the club. Please activate your account within 3 weeks otherwise you will need to contact the Member Secretary for a new activation code. This new site looks like it will streamline a lot of processes and allow you to book resources and workshops much easier and faster. It is still in its teething stage but the more you use it the easier it will get.

Member's Soup Lunch and Meeting Report
Sunday 6 August

It was lovely to see so many members come along on Sunday 6 August for our first member's meeting of the year, as well as bringing a plate, or slow cooker full of delicious soup, to share. No one needed dinner that night!

Topics of discussion included:

  • No Expressions exhibition in 2023, it's taking a hiatus.

  • Yes to:

    • setting up a member's only group on Facebook (see above)

    • being involved in 4017 Bayside Open Studios over 2 weekends in mid-October (see below)

    • looking at other opportunities to exhibit member's work locally and further afield

    • makers markets / Einbunpin / Jingle by the Bay with the aim to sell member's work, not a membership drive.

    • workshops on a range of topics - Christmas ornaments already locked in - 23rd Sept (see below), animals (dogs, rabbits/hares, pigs, chickens), closed forms on the wheel, glazing with club glazes 101, slip casting, creating plaster moulds, how to photograph your work, how to promote yourself on Instagram

    • hand building workshop for beginners - with Douglas and Melina

    • one-on-one tutoring with Lyn (wheel) and Melina (hand building)

    • workshops with tutors internal and external to the Club (if there's an artist you'd like to learn from, let us know and we'll reach out to see if they'd be interested in teaching at our shed)

  • Looking for a small smart television with USB port to have at the shed as a digital display of club news and member's work. If anyone has one they're willing to donate to the club please let us know!

  • Firing forms are currently being revamped and will include a tick box for approving pieces to be shared on our socials

  • New - Member's Feedback box - this is now in place near the Square. Do you have feedback or suggestions for the committee to consider? Please write it down and put it in the box. If you have a complaint - email the committee at shorncliffepotteryclubinc@gmail.com so the committee can action it appropriately.

  • Advice - Spring Fever - 1st to 3rd Sept - clay event in Maleny.

Some of the fantastic results from Tamara’s Torso Workshop recently.

Being Respectful, Feeling Safe

The club’s Code of Conduct was written to guide the safety and respect of members. Developing friendships, being co-operative, sharing ideas and skills as well as being respectful to each other in words and actions is something in which the club takes great pride. When members are working in the studio or interacting with other members via electronic means, everyone has a right to feel safe and not harassed

The Code of Conduct can be found in your membership documentation or you can request a copy from the Membership Officer here or you can read it here.

Hi I’m Rebecca

I’m married and work in the state govt. I started my pottery journey 3 years ago. At the moment, I only do hand building as I find there’s too many interesting things I want to make. When I’m not being potty, I like to grow my own veges or watch a footy game with my hubby.

See you every second Thursday night. πŸ˜Š

Hi, I’m Tamara

I have been potting since 2018 when I started my clay journey on the wheel. I joined the SPCInc at the start of 2020 as a way to connect with other potters and be part of a clay community. Wanting to develop new skills I started attending wheel and hand building workshops offered through the club, CA Qld and other ceramic artists. Hand building is currently my favourite method to create and I look forward to one day sharing the knowledge I have gained through the workshops.

Hi, I’m Douglas

I’m your Wednesday supervisor. I’ve had an obsession with all things pottery since my early teens. I wheel throw, hand build and have been known to sculpt. Pottery for me is about continued exploration of new ideas and techniques. Our club studio is a great place of enjoyment for me and I hope it will be yours too.

Hi, I’m Suzanne

I have been learning pottery for around 18 months. I have been hand building all kinds of weird and wonderful things from chooks to sheep and luminaries! Pottery is a great way to destress and relax 😊 I love to travel and now find myself checking out pottery related shopping wherever I visit!

Looking forward to seeing you every second Saturday morning.

Hi, I’m Melina

Melina is a supervisor on Tuesdays. She has a love of clay and has been playing with mud for the past 25 years. She started in Townsville with hand building, sculpting and wheel turning. She continues her journey making a variety of small batch and one of a kind organic pieces, she enjoys experimenting with different clays and is constantly learning new ways of making ceramics. Melina is an experienced designer, maker and vendor of art, craft, jewellery, accessories and decor, with a career spanning over 40 years.

Hi, I’m Ruth

I have worked in the design, visual arts and creative space since the 1980’s. I haven’t touched clay since high school but found it again last year. I attribute my growing love for it to a feeling of well-being that I was missing and a connection to a like minded community. My pieces are generally β€˜the weirder the better’.  Currently I have one of my organic candelabras showing in a gallery in Paddington.

I look forward to connecting with you on a Thursday morning.

Hi, I’m Amy

And I'm new to the pottery world, but I'm quickly realising how amazing this craft can be and can't seem to get enough of it! I have a photography and graphic design background and when I'm not daydreaming about hand building or throwing jars... I am hiking and freediving any spare moments I have!

Hi, I’m Lyn

Trained at the Adelaide school of Art , majoring in Pottery and Sculpture. Taught for many years but life took other directions for a while. I have found my happy place at Shorncliffe Pottery Club up to my armpits in clay or you will find me at one of the wheels.

Hi, I’m Greg

but most of you know me as Gus. I currently am not a regular supervisor but may come in to fill in from time to time to wear the orange apron. My history with the club is that I was a regular Thursday night and Saturday supervisor for a number of years and helped with the kilns until I moved away.

I do call in on occasion and am always willing to lend a hand.

You may have seen this in the Courier Mail recently but it looks like the PCYC is going to build a new centre in the next few years. If you hear any details don’t forget to pass them on to our Committee.

It is that time of year again; planning is already well underway for the 4017 Bayside Open Studios 2023 Event. Your committee is working hard in the background to make this third year better than ever. Of course, this event cannot happen without you the artists, your awesome studio spaces, and your artworks so we hope you will consider participating this year.

OPEN STUDIOS TWO WEEKENDS:

SATURDAY/SUNDAY 14/15 and 21/22 OCTOBER

EACH DAY FROM 10AM TO 4PM

50 Years of Handy Hints

We are fortunate to have received a very useful book titled β€œCollected Wisdom – 50 years of handy hints” from the Ceramic Study Group, Australia supplied to us by Clare H. from her trip to Gulgong. It is a collection of tips and techniques gathered and published in their newsletters since the 1960’s. Each month we will delve into this vast archive of information regarding all things ceramics and bring to you snippets of their collected wisdom.

Plus we have popped all the tips, hacks and techniques onto a β€˜Tips’ page on our club website so that you can refer to them easily.

April 2013

If you are photographing glazed pots try this. Spray artists' matt finish fixer (used to fix charcoal drawings) on the "hot spots". You will get better photos and the fixer is easily removed from the pot afterwards.

Zip seal bags are excellent for keeping small pieces of clay in working condition (e.g. teapot spouts and lids) till ready to be assembled. They can be reused over and over again and come in many sizes.

This app which only works with Apple products, is free and a great way to keep a record from start to finish of your projects, including your photos.

Thanks to Kevin W. for supplying this information.
