Hello Potters
From the President
After a lot of hard work by a number of members we now have three kilns in operation and boy are they busy kilns! How did we survive before 😂. A massive thank you to every one of you who played a part in the entire process. Special thanks to Steve and Douglas for everything you did.
It has been exciting to see our members’ works displayed in an art gallery. If you haven’t already been, there is still time to pop down to our first ever Showcase at Et al Gallery and Studio featuring SASart, it closes on the 6th October. Many thanks to all the volunteers who made this possible. Special thanks to Melina.
This brings me to a reminder about volunteering. We are a 100% volunteer run studio and nothing happens without the donation of time by our members. We expect all of our members to volunteer in some capacity over the year, and the year is fast running out with over 75% of members still to participate. So if that’s you then please think hard about stepping forward. Opportunities include:
Cleaning bee Saturday 12 October 1pm - click this link
Creative trail studio open days last two weekends of October - refer to events page on Helloclub.
Thursday night and Saturday Supervisor roles - email link
The Sandgate Creative Trail will have the studio open the last two Saturdays and Sundays in October from 10am to 4pm. The back room will be a gallery for members works and the public will be able to view the studio and participate in one of the four workshops we have available. So if you have ever wanted to show your family and friends where you create masterpieces, please bring them for a look. Bookings for workshops can be found on our website www.shorncliffepotteryclubinc.com.au/creativetrail
To include items for sale please complete the sales form and email to the club by the 16th October.
Happy potting
Suzanne
Being Respectful, Feeling Safe
The club’s Code of Conduct was written to guide the safety and respect of members. Developing friendships, being co-operative, sharing ideas and skills as well as being respectful to each other in words and actions is something in which the club takes great pride. When members are working in the studio or interacting with other members via electronic means, everyone has a right to feel safe and not harassed.
The Code of Conduct can be found in your membership documentation or you can request a copy from the Membership Officer here or read it here.

Workshop outline: This workshop will teach you how to sculpt a portrait of a dog (head only) of your choice. Through demonstrations and guided practice you will create a likeness of a dog using a range of hand building techniques. Whilst you make not completely finish your piece in the time allocated for this workshop you will have the acquired skills to enable you to complete any finishing details at home. This workshop is suitable for beginners with some prior experience with clay, to the Intermediate potter/sculptor. The program is designed to teach by demonstration a step by step process that can be then applied to further pieces you may wish to make. As this is an introductory course, it is recommended that you choose a dog breed that you would like to make. Making a portrait of your own pet may provide more challenging than there is time for on the day. The skills you will learn will make a more personal sculpture an easy second project.
Early registration and payment is required to secure your place.
Please register and pay via Hello Club

Giant Eggs for Your Garden?
Beth Crawford from Berkeley, NSW, takes part in sculpture festivals across the countryside. Her dinosaur eggs sell for $1200 each.
There's no risk of this dinosaur egg hatching. "People are quite happy with that because they know it will stay in the garden forever," the sculptor said. "They say, 'It's a talking piece in my garden', which makes me happy as well."
It's a slow process making the ceramic eggs, which are hand-painted and fired twice in the kiln.

Sacrificial Plates
Sacrificial plates are clay tiles specially prepared and fired to place under your ceramic pieces when they are glaze fired. They are placed there by the kiln packing team in an attempt to prevent any glazes from running off your piece and onto the kiln shelf. They are a protective measure to promote the longevity of the shelf’s life as glaze run-off is extremely hard to remove, sometimes impossible, and the kiln shelves are very expensive.
Remember when you are glazing your work, leave at least a 5mm clear space around the bottom edge with no glaze. And make sure you wipe the bottom of your work clean from any glaze. If you are unsure ask either the supervisor or one of the glaze team for advice.
As part of the new kilns’ processes all items to be glaze fired will require a sacrificial plate under them.
