Hello Potters
From the President
By the time you all read this newsletter our two new kilns should be tucked up safely in the studio. A lot of hard work has gone into getting SPC to this point so a massive thank you to you all. Testing will commence soon and we will update you on Facebook when the kiln room is back in action. Thank you for your patience and massive thanks to everyone involved.
Our first ever Et al Gallery and Studio Showcase featuring SASart is almost here. There is still time to put forward your pieces so get snapping some photos and send in your application. If you want a copy of the form, email shorncliffepotteryclubinc@gmail.com
There is an event night on Saturday 28th from 5pm to 7pm so please book a ticket to join https://events.humanitix.com/shorncliffe-pottery-club-and-sandgate-art-society-exhibition-event-night/tickets
Otherwise please come down to the gallery between the 25th September and 6th October and support our members
Close on the showcase’s footsteps is the Sandgate Creative Trail, the studio will be open the last two Saturdays and Sundays in October from 10am to 4pm. The back room will be a gallery for members works and the public will be able to view the studio and participate in one of the four workshops we have available. So if you have ever wanted to show your family and friends where you create masterpieces, please bring them for a look. Bookings for workshops can be found on our website here. Look out for calls for the cleaning bee, volunteers for the gallery and pieces.
The results of our glaze survey are in and we where very pleased with the responses, around 1/3 of our members responded. Our members have overwhelmingly voted to keep club glazes but we have heard your feedback and will start making some changes. If you want to join the glaze team please email the club. Otherwise look out for some changes coming.
Happy potting

We are trying to cater for all members of our club, therefore providing workshops on other days, not just weekends. Same with the themed socials. So ensure to check availability on Helloclub. If you're not sure how to do this, please speak with a supervisor at the shed.
We are looking for ideas for what other skills you would like to learn or further develop, so please reach out and provide some feedback.
If you would be interested in hosting a workshop or Sunday (or other day) Social, please contact me and I'd be happy to discuss this further or alternatively, if you would like to suggest a workshop or instructor for a possible workshop, please also contact me.
happy potting

Workshop outline: This workshop will teach you how to sculpt a portrait of a dog (head only) of your choice. Through demonstrations and guided practice you will create a likeness of a dog using a range of hand building techniques. Whilst you make not completely finish your piece in the time allocated for this workshop you will have the acquired skills to enable you to complete any finishing details at home. This workshop is suitable for beginners with some prior experience with clay, to the Intermediate potter/sculptor. The program is designed to teach through demonstration a step by step process that can be then applied to further pieces you may wish to make. As this is an introductory course, it is recommended that you choose a dog breed that you would like to make. Making a portrait of your own pet may provide more challenging than there is time for on the day. The skills you will learn will make a more personal sculpture an easy second project.
Early registration and payment is required to secure your place.

Can Clay Go Down the Drain?
As you probably know, you should never use a sink that is connected directly to normal household plumbing to rinse off your clay-covered hands or tools. If you do so without a clay trap to catch the clay particles, then they will settle inside your drain pipe and eventually clog it.
Here is a diagram to build a ‘Clay Trap’ for washing up after playing with clay and catching all of the clay particles before they go down the drain. It is not so hard to build as it uses very common items that you may have already.
What you will need:
• 2 buckets
• a large tub - big enough to hold the 2 buckets [see diagram]
• a length of tube/pipe - recommend about 30mm diameter or larger
• a hole saw the diameter of the pipe, or a sharp knife to cut holes in buckets
• some silicon sealant to seal around pipe
• a drill and drill bit to drill multiple holes in bucket
• a hacksaw or knife tool to cut the pipes to length
