Hello Potters

From the President

By the time you all read this newsletter our two new kilns should be tucked up safely in the studio. A lot of hard work has gone into getting SPC to this point so a massive thank you to you all. Testing will commence soon and we will update you on Facebook when the kiln room is back in action. Thank you for your patience and massive thanks to everyone involved.

Our first ever Et al Gallery and Studio Showcase featuring SASart is almost here. There is still time to put forward your pieces so get snapping some photos and send in your application. If you want a copy of the form, email shorncliffepotteryclubinc@gmail.com

There is an event night on Saturday 28th from 5pm to 7pm so please book a ticket to join https://events.humanitix.com/shorncliffe-pottery-club-and-sandgate-art-society-exhibition-event-night/tickets

Otherwise please come down to the gallery between the 25th September and 6th October and support our members

Close on the showcase’s footsteps is the Sandgate Creative Trail, the studio will be open the last two Saturdays and Sundays in October from 10am to 4pm. The back room will be a gallery for members works and the public will be able to view the studio and participate in one of the four workshops we have available.  So if you have ever wanted to show your family and friends where you create masterpieces, please bring them for a look.  Bookings for workshops can be found on our website here. Look out for calls for the cleaning bee, volunteers for the gallery and pieces.

The results of our glaze survey are in and we where very pleased with the responses, around 1/3 of our members responded. Our members have overwhelmingly voted to keep club glazes but we have heard your feedback and will start making some changes. If you want to join the glaze team please email the club. Otherwise look out for some changes coming.

Happy potting

Suzanne

Sculpting a Dog Bust in Clay

Workshop tutor: Lynn Wooldridge: B.Ed Visual Art, Adv Dip Studio Ceramics, 43yrs teaching experience in Vis. Art, Ceramics and Sculpture

Date: Sunday 13th October

Time: 9.00am – 3.30pm for workshop
with an 8.30am arrival and set up required

Venue: Shorncliffe Pottery Club, 106 Kempster St, Deagon

Class numbers: Minimum of 6 to a maximum of 8 participants

Cost: $120.00
Firing and any glazing or paint finishes are additional to the workshop cost.

Materials required by students: 1 x block of Feeneys BRT clay, solid bat/board to sculpt on, modeling tools, newspaper, plastic bag, printed reference images– full details are provided prior to workshop.

BYO shared lunch, tea and coffee provided

Workshop outline: This workshop will teach you how to sculpt a portrait of a dog (head only) of your choice. Through demonstrations and guided practice you will create a likeness of a dog using a range of hand building techniques. Whilst you make not completely finish your piece in the time allocated for this workshop you will have the acquired skills to enable you to complete any finishing details at home. This workshop is suitable for beginners with some prior experience with clay, to the Intermediate potter/sculptor. The program is designed to teach through demonstration a step by step process that can be then applied to further pieces you may wish to make. As this is an introductory course, it is recommended that you choose a dog breed that you would like to make. Making a portrait of your own pet may provide more challenging than there is time for on the day. The skills you will learn will make a more personal sculpture an easy second project.

Early registration and payment is required to secure your place.

WOODFIRE WA 2024

CARLOTTA STUDIO

16 – 21 September

Another wonderful group of artists are demonstrating at this year’s event. Fergus Stewart (Scotland) Jann Kesby (NSW) Ted Secombe (Victoria) Robyn Lees (WA) Stu McKay (WA) Mary Wallace (WA) and more, from pop in artists.

There will be salt firing, train kiln firing, kiln building, drum kiln fast firing, pit firing (notes from Mary, re pit firing, will be sent separately after registration) and a little bit of Raku. No previous wood firing experience needed.

What to bring. 12 pieces of BISQUED stoneware clay no taller than 30 cm. No platters but small slab plates are ok. I recommend Clayworks LGH as it will fire in all the kilns with ease. There are plenty of slips for the salt kiln and glazes are provided.

A pair of gardening gloves will be handy when stacking the wood. PPE is provided white stoking the kilns.

Tea and coffee is available around the clock. Bring your lunch. There is a fridge and microwave in the studio. You can pre order lunch from the Lavender Farm 300 metres away. We are totally off the grid so if we deplete the battery storage the generator will top them up and the power will be restored. In this event a little patience is required.

Weather: September and it’s spring but bring warm clothing for chilly nights.

Accommodation: There are plenty self-contained, BnB’s and camping facilities in and around Nannup and Carlotta (14km south of Nannup).

The cost for the workshop is $500

If you have any questions or need a registration form please contact me.

Cohorts Down Under Workshop

Announcing an exciting workshop with 2 ceramic artists direct from the United States who are dedicated to advancing the frontiers of clay.

Simon Levin, a potter and educator living in Pawnee, Illinois, has more than 30 years' experience working in clay and building community along the way.

Ann Marie Cooper, a potter and gallerist living in Bellingham, Washington, has more than 20 years’ experience working with artists in the gallery sector, and 15 years as one herself.

During this two-day workshop, join Simon Levin and Ann Marie Cooper as they teach techniques and pushing students’ creativity. Through quick demos, and hands-on teaching, participants will bolster their studio practice with new ways to create.

Discussion and questions will be used to drive ideas and creativity. Be ready to ask the questions you have wanted to ask about all things related to clay, wood & soda firing as well as the inspiring Cohorts.Art mentorship program founded by Simon Levin and managed by Ann Marie Cooper.

Can Clay Go Down the Drain?

As you probably know, you should never use a sink that is connected directly to normal household plumbing to rinse off your clay-covered hands or tools. If you do so without a clay trap to catch the clay particles, then they will settle inside your drain pipe and eventually clog it.

Here is a diagram to build a ‘Clay Trap’ for washing up after playing with clay and catching all of the clay particles before they go down the drain. It is not so hard to build as it uses very common items that you may have already.

What you will need:

• 2 buckets

• a large tub - big enough to hold the 2 buckets [see diagram]

• a length of tube/pipe - recommend about 30mm diameter or larger

• a hole saw the diameter of the pipe, or a sharp knife to cut holes in buckets

• some silicon sealant to seal around pipe

• a drill and drill bit to drill multiple holes in bucket

• a hacksaw or knife tool to cut the pipes to length
