Listed below are ceramic workshops, events, competitions and exhibitions that are held throughout the year with the pottery club. As a member of the Shorncliffe Pottery Club Inc. you have first access to the workshops which provide pottery techniques and opportunities to improve your skills, as well as having great fun.

Contact the pottery club if you are interested in attending any of the workshops. But get in fast as numbers are always limited.

6 week wheel workshop – beginners - completed

After positive feedback from Clare’s wheel throwing workshops in 2022 Clare has generously offered to take wheel throwing courses in 2023. This year Clare is offering two courses. Beginners and Level 2.

Beginners is the first course on offer and will commence on February 13. This workshop will run in a block of 6 weeks, with up to 5 participants. These classes will be conducted on a Monday evening, so that participants and tutor have the shed to themselves. More information on Level 2 will follow at the completion of the beginners’ course.

These workshops are offered only to members. If you are not a member of the club please go to our website and follow the online form to join up.

Join Shorncliffe Pottery Club Inc. in a 3 day extravaganza of pottery, painting, sculpture and photography. Come on the Opening Friday night and enjoy a beverage or two while you wander amongst the amazing local artisans’ works.

Art works will be on sale, so get in early to purchase something special for a gift or for your place.

6 Week Hand Building Workshop – completed

Again the club is very fortunate to be able to offer skill building workshops to our members. Gabriel, one of our experienced hand building members will be offering a short hand building course. These classes will run in a block of 6 weeks and will be limited to a maximum of 8.

A summary of the curriculum includes: clay safety, clay preparation, building small 3D forms, pinchpot method, making slip, using coils for a 3D form, slab mug and box, recycling clay, and glaze application.

Decorative Techniques on Clay Workshop with Helen Davey – completed

Keep the date in your diary open for Sunday 5th June. On this day we have a workshop ‘Decorative techniques on clay’ with Helen Davey. Helen is inspiring and will show us some really interesting techniques. There will be some hands-on for this workshop. This will be a full day workshop and will suit both hand builders and wheel throwers alike.

Commencing Wednesday 11 May 2022, the club will be offering more wheel throwing classes. These will again run in a block of 6 weeks, with up to 4 participants with 3 participants minimum for the class to proceed.

They will be conducted on Wednesday evenings, so that participants and tutor have the club to themselves. We have been very fortunate to be able to engage club member Clare Houston as tutor.

Commencing March 12th 2022, the club will be offering hand building classes. These will run in a block of 6 weeks, with up to 8 participants with 5 participants minimum for the class to proceed. These will be conducted on Saturday afternoons, so that participants and tutor have the club to themselves.

A summary of the curriculum includes: clay safety, clay preparation, building small 3D forms, pinchpot method, making slip, using coils for a 3D form, slab mug and box, recycling clay, glaze application.  The first 5 weeks will be held continuously, and then there will be a one week break to allow participants to finish off pieces and have them bisque fired. The last week will be on glazing techniques using the club glazes.

Six Week Wheel Workshop with Clare Houston - completed

Commencing January 12th 2022, the club will be offering wheel throwing classes. These will run in a block of 6 weeks, with up to 4 participants with 3 participants minimum for the class to proceed.

These will be conducted on Wednesday evenings, so that participants and tutor have the club to themselves.

The program: includes clay preparation, throwing a cylinder, a bowl, an altered cylinder (eg. vase), trimming, turning and preparing pieces for firing.

Start date: Wednesday 12 January, 2022

Times: 6.00pm to 9.00pm

The cost: $200 for a 6 week block, payable in advance. (The usual $7 club entry fee is included in the price)

About Clare

Clay experience:
Clare completed an internship of three months duration at Windmill Pottery in 2019.  This involved participating in all processes of a working pottery, including making clay, assisting with classes as well as throwing on the wheel, trimming and finishing to create objects from bowls, mugs, lidded vessels and teapots. 

Clare also completed a three month internship at ceramic production company Made OF Australia.

Clare has completed ceramics classes at the Brisbane Institute of Art and is currently taking classes with Bill Powell at Ceramx, School of Clay and Glass and tuition with Jackie Gasson and the Sunshine Coast Clayworkers.

She was recently awarded First Prize in Wheel Throwing at Shorncliffe Pottery Club Inc’s “Expressions” exhibition, 2021.

Teaching Experience:
Clare has experience in tutoring one on one and in small groups in her previous career as a Chef for 28 years and Chef Trainer at the Edgwarebury Hotel, part of the Regal Hotel group in London, UK.

Clare also holds a Graduate Teaching Diploma from Griffith University.

Clare says “I'm really enjoying my journey learning ceramics and pottery, and I'm looking forward to passing on skills and knowledge to other club members.”

Adrian Coles – Sculpture Workshop – completed

A new workshop is planned for August 22nd. This will be tutored by one of our club members, Adrian Coles. This is a workshop for the handbuilders who would like to explore making something wild and eccentric. Adrian has many years producing all types of ceramics and comes from a well–known family of ceramicists.
